Douglas Fir is the tallest evergreen conifer species in the UK. Considered one of the most resilient softwoods available, this species is frequently used in building projects all around the world. Strong and durable, Douglas Fir is readily available in our area.
Red Cedar is another evergreen conifer that we offer. Distinctive from it’s unique smell and reddish-brown heartwood, some specimens of this species can live to be over a thousand years old. This species is very resistant to moisture and rot, and is a fantastic choice for external cladding, shingling and fencing.
Larch is a deciduous conifer of the Pinaceae family. One of the few conifers that shed their leaves in winter, this tree is sometimes called the oak of the mountains because of the exceptional quality of wood it produces. Being one of the most durable and solid of the coniferous woods, this species is a brilliant choice for almost all needs.
The main determining factor in deciding which wood to choose is, in most cases, down to colour preference. Douglas Fir produces a light brown, Larch yields cream pink to bronze and Red Cedar features reddish browns.
Other materials we tend to use include Chestnut & Oak but we can work with an assortment of other woods depending on what stock we have available at the sawmill.
All of the woods listed above feature similar properties in a lot of categories. Therefore, if you require further information to ensure you’re making the right choice of wood to meet your specific requirements, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us as we’d be happy to advise.
